NEWLY APPOINTED KEY OFFICE BEARERS READY TO HELP UNIVERSITY REALISE SET AGENDA

UUM ONLINE: The newly appointed key office bearers are set to take the immense responsibility of continuing the efforts made by former key office bearers who will step down as Dean and Director from 1 July.

Prof. Dr. Hassan Abu Bakr will succeed the Dean of Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB), Prof. Dr. Shahizan Hassan, while Dr. Shahrina Othman will succeed the Director of the Centre for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marlin Marissa Malek.

The presentation of the appointment letters was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani at the Visitors’ Lounge this morning.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the two newly appointed key office bearers have had extensive experience leading OYAGSB and CUIC.

According to him, there would certainly be a lot of knowledge passed down from the Dean of OYAGSB and the Director of CUIC to Prof. Dr. Hassan and Dr. Shahrina to continue the set agenda of the respective centres of authority.

"It is my fervent hope that Dr. Marlin can continue to dedicate her expertise and service to UUM even though physically she will no longer be at this university but in spirit she will always be here.

He further reiterated that, both Prof. Dr. Shahizan and Dr. Marlin had rendered many sacrifices since serving UUM over 20 years ago beginning as tutors to their final positions as the Dean of OYAGSB and Director of CUIC.

The Vice-Chancellor also expressed his hope that the newly appointed key office bearers taking over the position will be able to take on the challenge with the capabilities that they both possess.

"OYAGSB has been developed to what it is today due to the many sacrifices made by the previous Deans and may OYAGSB be pillar to all business management studies at UUM.

"Likewise, CUIC is expected to continue its partnership with the industry as it is very important not only for the placement of student trainees but also the increase in marketability of UUM graduates," he said.

Timbalan Dekan di Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB), Lt. Kol.

INFORMATION TO ALL POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS: TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR TRIMESTER 193 IN LIGHT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND THE MOVEMOENT CONTROL ORDER (MCO)

UNIVERSITI UTARA MALAYSIA: LEARNING MUSTN'T STOP WITH COVID-19

UNIVERSITI UTARA MALAYSIA: LEARNING MUSTN'T STOP WITH COVID-19

Universiti Utara Malaysia Learning mustnt stop with Covid 19

The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed higher education institutions online to ensure that effective learning continues. While technology can facilitate seamless migration of face-to-face learning to a virtual platform, accessibility to quality digital content is crucial, especially during the Movement Control Order (MCO). As the workplace is rapidly expanding beyond the lecture halls, online classroom delivery will become a new norm.

Like anywhere else in the world, students at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) were initially forced to leave the campus and go home to follow the Malaysian directive of the movement control order (MCO) to curb the spread of the virus. As the students were not allowed to come back to the campus and face-to-face classes could not resume, as usual, an alternative to traditional teaching and learning had to be found. Fortunately, the University has implemented blended learning education in which students learn via electronic and online media as well as traditional face-to-face teaching for the last few years. Capitalizing on the existing learning management system (LMS), the transition to 100% blended and online has been rather smooth.

However, one key challenge with the full online transition is the access to Internet connection by students, especially those who live in remote locations where basic Internet infrastructures are not as good as those found in urban and suburban areas. This particularly true especially for the undergraduate students, and is not much an issue for OYAGSB students as they are mostly working adults. Prior to Covid-19, students mostly stayed on the campus or if they live nearby the campus, with their parents. In these situations, they tended to have an excellent access to Internet facilities. While technology can facilitate seamless migration of face-to-face learning to a virtual platform, accessibility to quality digital content is crucial, especially during the Movement Control Order (MCO). Thus, while faculty members were ready to move to online teaching, students might not necessarily be so, despite the various teaching and learning support provided by the University to facilitate online delivery.

Despite the technological challenges, online teaching and learning have to continue. Some faculty members indicate that they started to convert 100% of their traditional delivery to a fully online content since there is no definite date when the MCO will end. However, from the feedback gathered, online learning is significantly easier for technical subjects than for those that require creativity.  Thus, in the time of crisis, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, a variety of support should be continuously provided. One area that is worth mentioning is human tutoring, which can be facilitated through online and digital means that are equally accessible to everyone. Human tutoring, i.e., having faculty members who motivate, inspire, and support advancing independent thinking, is still indispensable.

The situation the world is facing now is somewhat unprecedented. It has forced higher learning institutions to think out of the box of how to deliver their academic responsibility. The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed higher education institutions online to ensure that effective learning continues. As the workplace is rapidly expanding beyond the lecture halls, online classroom delivery will become a new norm. More importantly, we hope that for Generation Z, Alpha, and the generations to come, the experiences of isolation and remote learning away from their peers, teachers, and classrooms will serve as a cautious reminder of the importance of the need for face-to-face and social interaction.

OYAGSB STUDENTS MENTOR ASNAF ENTREPRENUER

OYAGSB STUDENTS MENTOR ASNAF ENTREPRENUER

OYAGSB STUDENTS MENTOR ASNAF ENTREPRENUER

UUM ONLINE: Setting up businesses can be a daunting task.  It is especially so for those who are in need of funding even if it is just to start a small business. While it is important to obtain funding, support and encouragement are also key features for the establishment of small businesses especially for entrepreneurs in rural areas with a small target group of customers.

In order to have a better understanding of the challenges faced by small entrepreneurs, five OYAGSB students decided to spend time with a micro-business owner, Mdm. Mazliana on March 7.  As part of their corporate social responsibility towards the community, these students shared key aspects of entrepreneurship, which include the strategies of growing and maintaining a business.

Throughout their time with Mdm. Mazliana, they also shared various entrepreneurial insights. Amongst them were ideas on how to operate an effective micro business for her daily business operation and details of the types of assistance made available for small  businesses by the Malaysian government through the related ministries and agencies. Moreover, the team also demonstrated the ways of doing proper bookkeeping, steps to register the business with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) as well as ideas on how to grow the business to a bigger scale e.g. catering service to corporate offices and online presence.

One of the students who took part in this project is also an officer at Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), urged Mdm. Mazliana to get herself the typhoid injection.  “As a food-service provider, you must get your typhoid shot as it is compulsory for all food-service providers,” said Mr. Mohd. Izeham Abd Rhani.

With the current outbreak of the deadly coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Malaysian government has since issued the Movement Control Order (MCO).  As such, the situation will surely hit her business hard, like so many others. The team members expressed hopes that Mdm. Mazliana will apply all the dos and don’ts they shared with her to help her cope with the current situation in order to keep her business running in healthy and safe condition.

For the record, Mdm. Mazliana runs a business of selling nasi lemak. Her stall is located near Institut Kemahiran Tinggi Belia Negara (IKTBN) in Dusun Tua, Hulu Langat, Selangor. This corporate social responsibility or CSR project is part of the assignment student of the Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Sustainability course in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) Programme by coursework need to complete. Besides Mr. Mohd. Izeham Abd Rhani, Mdm. Norazliana Aziz, Mr. Bernard Chew Ming Zhao, Mr. Mohd Syarol Azuan Zakaria, and Mdm. Shasikala Vadivalu were also involved in this community-based project.

According to him, the programme would bring about significant impact on the development of entrepreneurship education at Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) by increasing the competency of the teaching staff. The programme would help participants have clear understanding of the latest business management and entrepreneurship concepts.

“This programme will also enhance the skills of these entrepreneurship educators to carry out research in line with MoE's aspiration of producing action-based research.

"The results of the case study can also be an effective teaching and learning tool for IHEs, while helping the Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) develop their business through case studies," he said at the closing ceremony of the ABEM Convention 3.0.

UUM PILIHAN PEGAWAI ANGKASA SAMBUNG PENGAJIAN DALAM PROGRAM MBA DI OYAGSB

UUM PILIHAN PEGAWAI ANGKASA SAMBUNG PENGAJIAN DALAM PROGRAM MBA DI OYAGSB

pegawai angkasa

SINTOK - Calling for Returning Students for Semester September 2019/2020 (A191)

Big Tulip Summit 2.0 - Inspiring, Empowering and Transforming Women

Big Tulip Summit 2.0 - Inspiring, Empowering and Transforming Women

bt

Penang - Following the success of its inaugural organisation last year, Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) once again hosted the Big Tulip Summit, a summit that serves as a platform for the learning and empowerment of highly aspiring female leaders to project their potential.

Adopting the theme, "Dare To Dream - Make It Happen," the Big Tulip Summit 2019 was organized in partnership with the Penang Women's Development Corporation (PWDC) and it garnered support from the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and the Penang State Government.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Penang Chief Minister, Yang Amat Berhormat Tuan Chow Kon Yeow.

"Congratulations to UUM and OYAGSB for organising the Big Tulip Summit which provides a platform for women to learn, build networks, exchange ideas and implement best practices.

"I am deeply impressed by UUM's commitment to empowering women and touched by the event’s ability to bring together many leading figures, inspirational speakers and decision makers to share their success stories with participants," he said in his opening remarks.

On the issue of women empowerment, YAB Tuan Chow said Penang was not only active and progressive but it also played a leading role in empowering women or better known as 'gender inclusiveness' in the state's policy.

"When the Penang2030 vision was introduced last year, we are committed to creating an inclusive and people-centred state. In making that a reality, gender inclusion is a key component of stimulating economic development and general well-being.

"By setting this idea as an objective, the Penang state government has pledged to transform the community's orthodox view of the role of men and women into the view that women have the opportunity to reach and realise their potential," he said.

He also reiterated that in support of Penang2030's vision, the state had adopted the Gender Inclusion Policy, making it the first state to adopt such a policy in Malaysia.

"This policy promotes gender-based management by reaching a 40:40:20 ratio or 40% women, 40% men and 20% of both men and women, especially in leadership positions," he said.

Meanwhile UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani said UUM had conceptualized and developed the Big Tulip Summit as a platform for the learning and empowerment of aspiring women leaders to highlight their potential and grow in the context of diversity and participation in the workplace, with a clear focus on closing the gender gap at work.

According to him, the Big Tulip Summit received formal recognition and was given the status of the National Women Inspiring Programme by YAB Dato' Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia cum the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development during its inaugural organisation on 3 December 2018 in Kuala Lumpur.

The opening ceremony of the Big Tulip Summit 2019 also witnessed the presentation of the keynote address entitled "Equality Is My Dream" by YB Puan Chong Eng, Exco for Women and Family Development, Gender Equality and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs cum Chairman of PWDC.

The two-day Big Tulip Summit 2019 which began on 20 August  brought together speakers and influential and inspirational panellists comprising well-known leaders, prominent men and successful women.

These leaders shared leadership experiences, knowledge and professional and personal stories to inspire some 230 participants.
