SINTOK July 14 2019 – 37 Doctoral Candidates today participated in a talk by Associate Professor Dr Hassan Abu Bakar* on “Methodology – Quantitative Research Design” as he shared his view on why is it important in methodological theory to understand the underlying theoretical aspects when articulating theory involved in research, the practices involved in the research process and the relationship between the two. 

It is hoped that Doctoral Candidates who participated benefited through this programme and overall wider benefits through their doctoral programmes in their personal development.

SINTOK June 30 2019 – 17 Doctoral Candidates today participated in a talk by Associate Professor Dr Asmat Nizam Abdul Talib* on “Preparing Literature Review” as part of a Doctoral Training Series programme organized by Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business to help doctoral candidates who are at various stages of their doctoral programme.

Literature reviews requires research and preparation. Literature must be searched and information collected must be analysed, summarized and synthesized so that it can be written into the review. Dr. Asmat shared his experience on preparing for and conducting this important process, in showing originality and relevance of research problems.

It is hoped that Doctoral Candidates who participated benefited through this programme and overall wider benefits through their doctoral programmes in their personal development.

* Dr. Asmat Nizam is associate professor of international business and international marketing at OYAGSB. Asmat’s teaching focuses on international business and international marketing strategy with an emphasis on building the organization and capabilities for (export) customer focus.

UUM ONLINE: Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB) is committed to providing service that is friendly, helpful and responsive to the needs of students. OYAGSB makes it its business to ensure that students’ time at UUM in general and OYAGSB in particular is as pleasant and productive as possible.

OYAGSB endeavours to treat everyone with respect, and so, from time to time OYAGSB organizes activities that could add value to its academic programmes in which their students are enrolled into.
One such activity is engaging with students through Town Hall meetings. On 15 June 2019, a Town Hall meeting was held at OYAGSB Kuala Lumpur.

Among those who attended the meeting were MBA and DBA students, the Directors of Programmes, the Academic Director of OYAGSB Kuala Lumpur and Head of Administration at OYAGSB.

The Town Hall meeting, an annual activity held at campuses namely Sintok and Kuala Lumpur acts as a platform for OYAGSB students and staffs (academic and administration) to meet and discuss the way forward to addressing related issues and exchange ideas on improving academic as well as non-academic matters.

During the recent Town Hall meeting, students of OYAGSB Kuala Lumpur were reminded to express their concerns or any grievances through the right channel. This is because OYAGSB gives their highest commitment in ensuring customers’ (students) satisfaction and improving their service.

At the Town Hall meeting, issues raised by the students were on modular teaching, MBA project paper and CMI.

OYAGSB is always trying its best to maintain good relationships with the existing students and the public, thus making them feel right at home and as part of the UUM big family is the priority of OYAGSB.

On 16 June 2019, OYAGSB took the initiative to organise its Open Day 2019 at OYAGSB Kuala Lumpur to encourage potential customers (students) to enrol to their various study programmes.

Such an event is necessary as it doubles as a platform to introduce the programmes offered by OYAGSB, thus attract more potential students to continue their studies at UUM and also provides space for the public to further interact and gather information related to OYAGSB.

Hence, by doing so, it would greatly improve the level of understanding of potential students on the MBA and DBA programmes offered by OYAGSB as well as on other postgraduate programmes such as PhD. and DMgt.

At the OYAGSB Kuala Lumpur Open Day 2019 guests mingled with staffs and existing students in a friendly atmosphere. Dr Francis Chuah, the Director of the MBA programme and Prof Dr Nor Azila Mohd Noor, the Director of the DBA programme spent time with the guests sharing information about the various programmes offered.

Guests who participated in the programme had the opportunity to preview the programmes and they expressed their keen interest in getting to know OYAGSB and UUM closer. These potential students also looked forward to exploring the opportunities to study at OYAGSB.

The Open Day successfully strengthened the relationship between existing students and OYAGSB staffs. Consultation counters were up and running throughout the event to assist existing students’ with their queries as well as to help potential students’ on obtaining information and getting further explanation on matters related to the academic programmes, admission, visa application and enquiries on financial assistance.

A similar Open Day programme is scheduled to be held at OYAGSB Sintok campus on 7 July 2019. The activities forementioned were initiated by the Student Experience and Customer Care Unit of OYAGSB, a unit committed in developing new ways of enhancing the customers (students) experience at OYAGSB.

OYAGSB emphasizes on the students’ learning experience and student’s journey.

For members of staff at OYAGSB, it is not just about the scrolls the students receive during the convocation but more about the new people that they meet along the way, the activities that they participate in and the lives that they touch.

All these will indeed enrich the students’ learning experience and will leave them with fond memories.

UUM ONLINE: The collaboration between Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB) and Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), Oman enabled eighteen MBA students from the SQU to spend a week-long study trip in Kuala Lumpur.

During their one-week stay in Kuala Lumpur, the students had the opportunity to learn up close and personal about the different cultures of Malaysians and ways of conducting business as a way of expanding their international horizon and perspective.

Throughout the duration of the study trip, the students visited a number of corporate organisations namely Petronas, Bank Negara, Celcom, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Small Medium Enterprises (SME) Corp, and KPJ Healthcare Berhad.

Besides the company visits, the students also attended three academic talks on the Malaysian experience in its economic development and global relations. The talks which were delivered by representatives from the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) were held at OYAGSB Kuala Lumpur.

The students also had the opportunity to visit places of interest around Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. In Kuala Lumpur, the students visited the National Museum and had the opportunity to perform their prayers at the National Mosque. They also went on a leisurely cruise on the Putrajaya Lake to experience the enchanting beauty and scenery of Putrajaya.

Sometime in October of this year, OYAGSB will be sending its MBA students to the Sultanate of Oman for a similar academic and non-academic experience. Such international exposure will truly benefit the students in developing their cross-cultural competencies and international networking toward their career and personal growth and development.

SINTOK June 23 2019 – 19 Doctoral Candidates today participated in a talk by Professor Dr Wan Nordin Wan Hussin* on “Archival Research using DataStream” this morning at OYAGSB Sintok Studio room. The talk is part of a Doctoral Training Series programme organized by Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business to help doctoral candidates who are at various stages of their doctoral programme. 

Dr Wan Nordin in his talk shared his experience in conducting archival research involving primary sources held in DataStream archives and other such repository. His talk helped participants rethink, evaluate and restructure their approach towards their research. 

It is hoped that Doctoral Candidates who participated benefited through this programme and overall wider benefits through their doctoral programmes in their personal development.

* Dr. Wan Nordin Wan Hussin is a resident fellow at OYAGSB and  Professor of Financial Reporting and Corporate Governance.  His research manuscripts have been published in various academic journals, including ISI-indexed and ABDC A-ranked journals such as Ecological Indicators.

Associate Professor Dr Zaleha Othman begins her talk on “Qualitative Research Methodology” by reminding doctoral candidates that learning qualitative research requires learning from experts in the field, qualitative research Gurus. Throughout her talk, Dr. Zaleha introduced participants to qualitative research method and their related Gurus.


The Doctoral Training series consist of intensive training blocks where all the OYAGSB doctoral researchers can come together for a full or half-day, to receive timely training on topics relevant to the different stages of their doctoral programme and career development. 

This session was opened by Professor Dr Norazah Mohd Suki, Director of PhD & D. Management Programme Othman Yeop Abdullah School of Business (OYAGSB) welcomed almost 30 doctoral candidates.

Sepang - Prof. Ts. Dr. Norazah Mohd Suki, a Professor at Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB) received the Prominent Topics in Research Award at the Malaysia's Research Star Award (MRSA) and CREAM Journal Recognition 2018 at Sama-Sama Hotel, recently.

Prof. Ts. Dr Norazah said the award was an acknowledgment of her performance and contribution in research that is related to Behaviour, Recycling and Green Purchase.

According to her, the award was the result of a prominent and significant research evaluation at   international level. “Consumer Environmental Concern and Green Product Purchase in Malaysia: Structural Effects of Consumption Values” published in the Journal of Cleaner Production (5.651) and “Modeling the Determinants of Consumers' Attitudes toward Online Group Buying: Do Risks and Trusts Matters?” published in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services (Impact Factor = 2.919) were amongst her research topics.

Prof. Ts. Dr. Norazah has published more than 300 papers in referenced journals, chapters in books, books and conference papers detailing research activities, as well as coordinating and participating in research projects.

She is also an editor of the SCOPUS indexed book, besides recording SCOPUS h-index of 16.

The MRSA Award is presented to local researchers as recognition and appreciation of their success in producing high-quality research and publications that have been successfully published and indexed into leading international database.

MRSA is recognition awarded by two prestigious indexing agencies, Clarivate Analytics and Elsevier. The evaluation involved nine (9) categories, Frontier Researcher, Hot Review Paper, Top Peer Reviewer, Research and Innovation Excellence, Highly Cited Reseacher 2017, International Research Collaboration and Young Researcher apart from Prominent Topics in Research and High Impact Paper.

The awards were presented by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Education, Dato' Mohd Ghazali Abas who represented the Malaysian Education Minister.

UUM ONLINE: In efforts to further consolidate the direction of the organisation, members of staff at OYAGSB came together to develop the OYAGSB strategic plan at its workshop session which was held at its very own school recently.

The Dean, Prof. Dr. Shahizan Hassan said the OYAGSB Strategic Plan Workshop was an endeavour to empower both the organizational governance and cultivation of noble values towards creating OYAGSB's excellence and strengthening its role in the direction aspired by the University.

"This workshop functions as a platform for brainstorming sessions and discussions on the aspects of the restructuring and re-branding of OYAGSB in line with the changes which have taken shape in OYAGSB's highest leadership.

"This one-day workshop also emphasizes on the changes which have taken place in the current business environment and the need for members of staff at OYAGSB to be ever ready to face competition in the increasingly competitive education market," he said.

A total of five Key Result Areas (KRAs) were discussed namely the provider of distinctively different postgraduate business education; a renowned provider of executive development and business training; and excel in business research and consultancy.

A Fire Drill was held at the Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB) Building in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department of Bukit Kayu Hitam.

The training was followed by a briefing and demonstration of the proper use of fire extinguishers by the Fire Department.

The objective of this Fire Drill is to expose OYAGSB staff and students to the building’s evacuation plan and notification of the assembly point and steps to be taken in the event of emergency.

The event was concluded with the presentation of a certificate of appreciation by the Deputy Dean (Academic and International), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Subramaniam Sri Ramalu to Bukit Kayu Hitam Fire and Rescue officers.

PRME is the Principles for Responsible Management Education, which is a United Nations-supported initiative founded in 2007 as a platform to raise the profile of sustainability in schools around the world, and to equip today's business students with the understanding and ability to deliver change tomorrow. Working through Six Principles, PRME engages business and management schools to ensure they provide future leaders with the skills needed to balance economic and sustainability goals while drawing attention to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aligning academic institutions with the work of the UN Global Compact. To meet its mission, PRME has established various chapters across the world, and the Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School is the Secretariat of PRME Chapter Asean+. To realise its goals, various initiatives have been planned and implemented.

As part of the PRME initiative, we are pleased to announce a video competition organised by PRME Chapter DACH. The competition is part of the 5th PRME Research Conference  (https://www.international-csr.org/prme-research-conference/). The competition aims to involve the voices of students in the conference and beyond.

Students (or student teams) who take part in the competition produce a two-minute video in which they present their views and ideas on "Responsible Management Education". The video will be uploaded to YouTube and evaluated by a jury after the closing date (14.10.2018).

The winning students or teams will be honoured during a special award ceremony at the conference in Cologne. In addition, the winning videos and those on the shortlist will be featured at the conference and distributed to the PRME community via social media. Winners and runners-up also receive vouchers for Fair-Trade shops in their region.

CEEMAN International Quality Accreditation Awarded to OYAGSB

We are delighted to announce that the CEEMAN International Quality Accreditation (CEEMAN IQA) was awarded to Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business, which is part of Universiti Utara Malaysia.

Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School (OYAGSB, or the School) is a significant part of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), which was first formed in 1984 after gaining approval from the Malaysian cabinet in the year before. The first PhD and MBA programmes were launched in the 1990s, and both UUM and the School are under the audit and control of the Malaysian Qualification Agency. While being located in Sintok, the School has been delivering its educational programs in Kuala Lumpur since 2005, which has been a significant step both for staff as well as for student recruitment. The school holds the following accreditations:
1) ABEST21 (The Alliance on Business Education and Scholarship for Tomorrow’s 21st Century Organisation) since 2015;
2) AMBA since 2015 and AACSB since 2016.

Concerning knowledge creation, the Peer Review Team (PRT) for OYAGSB welcomed that the School places high importance on research. OYAGSB has established the Institute for Leadership Innovation and Change, which provides support for producing high-impact and quality research that is rigorous, practical, and relevant. OYAGSB also prioritizes combining academic and practice-oriented research with education by encouraging resident faculty members to develop and integrate local, relevant cases in their curricula. Moreover, most OYAGSB staff are publishing in practitioner journals, which is regarded as highly commendable considering its contribution to knowledge transfer. Another significant approach is that the School closely collaborates with representatives from the business world, which offers both OYAGSB staff and students numerous opportunities for research and similar endeavours.

To attain optimal knowledge transfer, OYAGSB has introduced various learning and teaching methods such as using both local and international case studies, and blending theoretical with more practical approaches. To gain a better understanding of what is currently happening at the forefront of business and what insights can be drawn from corporate partners, students have the opportunity to hear from a wide range of industry leaders and practitioners throughout the course of their studies. Besides their more traditional programs, the School has recently introduced a lot of new additions such as revised MBA programs that feature personal coaching, and tailor-made programs. Furthermore, the PRT offered high praise for the School’s approach to creating a positive student experience: the teaching standard is high across the board and is being maintained by means of evaluation forms that engage the students. The program outlines are well structured and the availability of online learning packages and the broad use of blended learning is regarded as a commendable way of enriching the process of knowledge transfer.

Finally, when it comes to the commitment of OYAGSB to responsible practices, a standard of CEEMAN IQA that has been defined as an institution demonstrating responsible practices through education, research and institutional behaviour, OYAGSB was lauded for incorporating elements of corporate social responsibility, responsible leadership and business ethics in all its programs. Sustainability is deeply embedded in the mission of the School as well, and the servicing of local community projects follows that standard. In 2016, UUM was the Global Gold Winner of the Green World Awards 2016 for Education and Training category, and it is committed to the principles of the Environment Management System certification. Notably, OYAGSB is one of the signatories of UN PRME and hosted the fifth UN PRME Regional Forum in November 2014, during which the School was appointed as the Secretariat for the ASEAN+ Chapter.

Based on these findings the CEEMAN Accreditation Committee awarded the CEEMAN International Quality Accreditation to Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business on April 24, 2018.

The Semarak Kasih Ramadhan 1439H programme at Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB) has received encouraging response from all OYAGSB members.

A total of 30 packages of necessities such as rice, cooking oil, and sugar were distributed to the unfortunate.

The collection drive started since early Ramadhan, and the money collected was used to purchase the items.

Among the beneficiaries were unfortunate and poor staff and those with disabilities who live in nearby villages such as Kampung Tradisi-Changlun, Kampung Sungai Baru-Jitra, and Kampung Bukit Teriak in Alor Setar.

Deputy Dean, Prof Dr Shahizan Hassan said, "We initiate such programme every year to show our concern for the disadvantaged group and giving back to the community."

Trash Hero Instills the Awareness of Love for the Environment Amongst UUM Students

UUM ONLINE: The founder of Langkawi Trash Hero cum nature lover, Ms. Ulrika Player, from Sweden successfully instilled awareness to appreciate and protect the environment amongst the students of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).

According to Ms. Ulrika, when she set foot on the island well-known for the legend of Mahsuri, she began to fall in love with the beauty of Langkawi Island, but the rubbish which was visible everywhere was an eyesore to her.

"I saw a lot of people throwing rubbish as they wished and this attitude is very disappointing, it then dawned on me the idea of establishing Langkawi's Trash Hero as soon as I witnessed the Trash Hero World, a movement that does volunteer work to pick up rubbish in order to protect the environment.

"I am aware that we are unable to change others, so I started with myself by demonstrating good attitude for others to emulate including stopping my motorcycle to pick up rubbish and from there people began to take notice," she said.

"The first six months made me want to give up. Imagine picking up garbage alone and the next day rubbish was scattered again at the same place. I felt miserable. Fortunately enough for me, Trash Hero World helped me a lot by sharing their experiences.

"Finally, I got back up and continued my quest which has also made five-star hotels turn the Trash Hero programme as a part of tourism activities," she said in conjunction with the community service programme, Down to Earth: Trash Hero recently.

Meanwhile, Director (Student Experience & Customer Care) Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School (OYAGSB), Dr. Marlin Marissa Malek Abdul Malek stressed that the programme organized by OYAGSB was aimed at inculcating the awareness of caring for the environment, beginning with the denizens of UUM and subsequently with communities nearby to UUM.

"To maintain cleanliness we need to change mentality. This is not the job for cleaner or UPSB workers only but it is our collective responsibility in protecting the environment.  This is because pollution of the environment will harm the people.

"It's time for students to return something to UUM and I hope this programme encourages others to be aware of the environment and care for the environment just as we would look after our own homes," said Dr. Marlin Marissa Malek Abdul Malek who was equally impressed by the enthusiasm shown by Ms. Ulrika.

Approximately 60 UUM volunteers, comprising members of staff and students, managed to collect more than 200 kilograms of garbage found in Sintok Forest and the garbage was sorted into the blue plastic bags for cans and green plastic bags for plastic to better facilitate solid waste management.

Professor T C Melewar Shares Practical Tips for Publishing Articles in Leading Academic Journals

"The ranking of a university and the members of the staff are judged based on the quality of the research and publications produced by the university. For that reason, articles that have been published in high-impact journals can affect the position of a university in the international rankings," said Professor T C Melewar, Professor of Marketing and Strategy from the Middlesex University, London, United Kingdom.

Professor T C Melewar is also the Head of Marketing, Branding and Tourism (MBT) Department at the Middlesex University Business School, UK. With 30 years of academic experience, he was the invited speaker at the OYAGSB BizTalk 4/2018 entitled Ranking, Reputation and Research (3Rs): Voyage, Vista and Viewpoint. The talk was held at the OYAGSB Studio, UUM.

According to Prof. Melewar, the top three most established and influential global rankings that put greater emphasis on the research and publications are the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings and Shanghai Ranking (Academic Ranking of World Universities).

"Basically, we need to call attention to the research studies published in the Social Science Citation Index (ISI, Institute for Scientific Information).

“The SSCI (Social Sciences Citation Index) Journal is one of the leading journals and it is quite tough to get articles published in this journal. It gets more difficult to publish in journals with higher impact factors - for instance the Journal of Business Research (JBR) – 3.354; Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) – 5.869; the European Journal of Marketing (EJM) – 1.333; Journal of World Business (JWB) – 3.758 and the Industrial Marketing Management  (IMM) – 3.166," added  Prof. Melewar.

He also remarked that, it gets much harder to publish articles in ISI journals, hence researchers need to take some necessary actions.

"Among other, researchers must aim for the suitable and appropriate journal, read the research papers that are related to the topics of the targeted journal, adhere to the specific guidelines and requirements for submission of research papers, edit and proofread the articles repeatedly and finally, submit the manuscript to at least two academicians who have published articles in the journal for further comment and feedback.

"After that, go through the manuscript again and send it for publication. If it is rejected, read the comment, make the necessary amendments and send it to the appropriate journal. If you were asked to re-check and re-submit, make the necessary corrections and re-send the manuscript. Most importantly, do not lose hope.

"When you already have the experience of publishing in leading journals, everything will be easier because you already know the process, procedures and intricacies of publishing in a high-impact journal," explained Prof. Melewar to UUM lecturers, staff members and postgraduate students.

Splashing Fun Time With Children With Special Needs

Students of the MBA programme at the Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB) honoured a group of children with autism in conjunction with the World Autism Awareness Day which is celebrated every April at the Fantasia Aquapark, Bandar Darul Aman, Jitra.

According to Dr. Gunalan Nadarajah, lecturer at OYAGSB, the special children were welcomed by a representative from the management team of Fantasia Aquapark. Fantasia Aquapark was gracious enough to sponsor the entrance tickets of the MBA students.

He said the programme was organised in collaboration with the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) Alor Setar and was officiated the by the Chairman of NASOM.

"For students pursuing courses namely OMMU6013, Business Ethics, CSR and Sustainability, this is an opportunity for them to come into contact with these special children," he said.

Aptly themed, “Different is Not Less”, these special children received the same services and were treated no different from other normal children. They did and tried various exciting activities including telematch and entertaining games.

"We hope to organise such activity every year in conjunction with the World Autism Awareness Day as our corporate social responsibility (CSR) to the community, especially with regards to these special children," he added.

Many Hands Make Work Light


The commitment of five MBA students of Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB) to help an unfortunate family was demonstrated through a corporate social responsibility (CSR) at Nyior Chabang village in Langkawi recently.

The students assisted the villagers to improve the basic amenities of the affected family by putting up new walls and roofs and painting. The students even paid the paints themselves.

The activity was coordinated by Dr Gunalan Nadarajah, a senior lecturer of OYAGSB who teaches OMMU 6013 Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Sustainability. The activity was a platform for the students to develop the spirit of teamwork and giving back to the community.

The Community Service Programme, the Poor Family House Construction Programme organised by the Ayer Hangat State Assemblyman's Office, and the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) were also involved in the activity.

‘I am very proud of the efforts of these students who are willing to cross the ocean to help this family. This effort will not cease here and will continue in the future,’ added Dr Gunalan Nadarajah.

Disruptive Learning on Hydrophonic Business Ventures for Sustainability


A total of 30 MBA students of Othman Yeop Abdullah Business Graduate (OYAGSB) received value-added knowledge through the modernized cultivation of hydroponics.

The activity was held on 13th and 14th April at RISDA, Tanjung Genting as a disruptive learning activity. Disruptive learning is out-of-classroom learning that encourages students to develop self-reflexivity skills and encourages them to be self-reflective so that they could improve their current work practices.

The activity involved experts from the School of Economics, Finance and Banking.

Hydroponics agriculture has many advantages over the conventional one where nutrient-rich solutions and nutrients are directly fed to the roots.

This agricultural technique promises a lucrative outcome, is clean, is without any unpleasant odour, and is less burdensome on our energy has been reported to have attracted many groups, especially the younger generation to be actively involved in this industry.

Through such activity, OYAGSB is confident that new business opportunities could be explored and more entrepreneurs among the MBA students could be developed.
